10:30 a.m. Building Knowledge-Building Communities Online
Dr. Karen Swan, Kent State University

One of the more vexing issues in moving successful face-to-face courses to online formats is how to develop the sense of classroom community and spirit of inquiry among online students that we know is so important to learning at the college and university level. This presentation will introduce the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model, which locates robust online learning at the intersection of three “presences” – cognitive presence, teaching presence, social presence – and explore how to develop these presences in online courses. Effective practices and research findings in each of the three areas will be explored and participant interaction encouraged. A new survey instrument for assessing student perceptions of the three presences and the Sloan-C effective practices database will also be shared.

12:30 p.m. Next Stop: Communityville - Please Mind the Gap

Our journey comes full circle as we reflect and explore ways of sharing information with your community from insightful events. What did you learn? How will you apply it in your community? How will you maintain what you have learned?
1:30 p.m. Playing with Trains

This year OLN is experimenting with a technology called Ning, an online networking tool. Let's take a moment to explore how we can network within and among our communities.

2:30 p.m. Stay on Track

"Tell us what you are doing - Do what you said you would do - Reflect on what you did." Keeping us all informed will help you stay on track. As we progress through the year, use Ning to showcase your work, ask questions of the whole region, and stay connected with other communities in Ohio!
