The following are comments I received from my students in JCOM 327. A consultant in the teaching center did a focus group with my students and supplied me with the following feedback:

What is helping you learn in this class?

• Enthusiastic professor, he enjoys the class and subject.
• Available after class.
• He is open to discussion, fields questions.
• Very enthusiastic about the material and teaching it.
• Knows the material well.
• Encourages student involvement.
• The instructor is extremely patient w/the class, and seems extremely knowledgeable.
• His personal knowledge of the areas we discuss in class.
• Group work helps us to express our thoughts and ideas.
• He is patient with his students.
• He is very enthusiastic about the class as whole.The activities in class are creative and fun. They apply to class.
• Seems very approachable.
• Exams are straight-forward and fair.
• Subject matter is interesting.
• Exam was fine and well structured.
• Teacher is very open-minded, and lets other voice opinions.
• He listens well to opinions.
• Videos are good.

• He's not prepared for the class.
• He is too strict about following the agenda.
• There’s too much information presented at one time.
• Not organized.
• Slow paced.
• Not clear in presenting materials.
• The room is hot and there are no windows.
• He seems to not be able to explain the information to us in an orderly fashion.
• The textbook is confusing
• He doesn't clarify his assignments.
• The wording of his quizzes is confusing.
• He doesn’t cover a lot of things that will be on the midterm.
• Spends too much time on certain topics, doesn’t always cover all the material.
• Off the topic discussions.
• Pace of class. Its too fast sometimes.
• Sometimes discussion is repetitive and boring.

• Be more organized and clearer when giving out assignments and tests.
• We would like study guides for the exams.
• Our in-class assignments do not help us understand the material.
• Be clearer on grading.
• Organize and clarify quizzes.
• More organized schedule of class time.
• Organize ideas.
• Return our work to us more quickly.
• Give us a break sometime in class.
• More experiments and group interaction.
• More out of class activities.
• Don’t give us a break but let us out early.
• Go over readings more.
