Most of the teaching I do is with medical students in my practice office at the OSU Thomas E. Rardin Family Practice Center on High Street. I am seldom involved in classroom courses. Courses I teach include physical examination for second-year medical students and third-year students in the family practice clerkship. My practice is busy and well-established. Thus I see few new patients with new problems but more patients with chronic diseases or needing preventive care. My style is more observational/hands-on with second-year students. Third -years usually see patients first and then present to me. Areas I emphasize in the clerkship include chronic diseases management, screening for cancer and heart disease and drug therapy. I try to identify two or three teaching points per patient as opposed to minilectures. On occasion I precept senior medical students on a sub-internship in OSU East Hospital.
