I teach Plant Biology 101-102. They are courses designed for the non-major student. Most of my students are uninterested in science and take the course to fulfill requirements. My job is to interest the students in science, as much as it it to teach them the facts of science. I try to do this by presenting the facts in an unusual and interesting fashion. For example, in the first lecture I introduce TROG, an intergalactic traveler who wants to learn about earth. TROG wears a long red cape, a tall pointed hat plus a mask, and carries a couple of sparklers. Needless tosay, he gets the student's attention and they listen to what he tells them. In another lecture, I bring in 120 balloons and present DNA structure and reproduction, RNA structure and function, and protein synthesis using them. I also make heavy use of visual material because biology is, in fact, a very visual subject. I love to teach and I hope students come to my lectures to learn the joys of plants and what they can do.
