My three primary goals in teaching are to help students learn to think systematically, to teach skills that can be used for solving a wide variety of problems and, finally, to provide an understanding of, and instill an appreciation for, the achievements of past physicists.
In an effort to make physics easier to learn, I try to split each topic into segments so that students can more easily progress to mastery of the topic. I typically present a theoretical concept and then solve a problem using the concept to make the concept less abstract. During lecture, everything that should be in students' notes is written on the board. For each homework assignment, solutions to an alternative homework assignment, which consists of problems that cover the same material but are different from the assigned problems, are placed on reserve. I encourage a casual class atmosphere where there is regular give-and-take.
