Exceptional teaching is ninety percent perspiration, ten percent inspiration. First, there is no substitute for knowledge of one's academic subject and one's students. Both are matters of continuing education. Teaching technique should fit the class and subject matter, so it will vary widely even within a single discipline. I think enthusiasm for one's subject and teaching are essential and cannot be manufactured, but effective teaching and real learning can occur before artistry. Work hard, and they will come.
